Is Coursera Plus worth it? Do the math before you subscribe
Coursera Plus is worth it if you will finish enough paid study to beat paying program by program. For most people that means about seven or more months of real study, or two or more programs in a year. The calculator below works it out with your own hours.

Short answer
Worth it for committed learners who will finish a long program or stack two or more certificates in a year. Poor value if you will finish one short course, if your program isn't included, or if you tend to stall after week two. The best low-risk route for most people: start monthly with the 7-day trial, then switch to annual only once you are sure you'll keep going.

What Coursera Plus costs
| Plan | Price (US list) | Trial / refund | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coursera Plus Monthly | $59/month | 7-day free trial; cancel anytime; no partial refunds | Best for under ~7 months of study |
| Coursera Plus Annual | $399/year (about $33/month) | 14-day money-back guarantee from the original payment | Renewals are not refunded; promos often discount the first year |
| Single program subscription (for comparison) | Set per program; third-party trackers report roughly $49–$79/month | Many start with a 7-day trial | Only that one program |
Coursera has introduced localized pricing, so the price in your country may differ. In India, Coursera's help center says only the monthly plan is offered. Coursera runs promotions several times a year, and third-party deal trackers report November discounts on the annual plan in recent years, but past sales don't guarantee future ones. The "Save 40%" style label you may see on the annual plan compares it with twelve months of monthly billing. It is not a separate sale. Check the current price on Coursera's official page before you buy.
What's included, and what isn't
Included
- 10,000+ courses, Guided Projects and Specializations (Coursera says Plus covers over 90% of the catalog)
- Most Professional Certificates (Google, IBM, Meta and others)
- Unlimited certificates for what you complete while subscribed
- Graded assignments and AI features such as Coursera Coach where available
Not included
- Online degrees and for-credit courses
- MasterTrack and similar university-credit programs
- Certain Professional Certificates and partner programs. Check the program page
- Coursera for Teams/Business content and enterprise-only material
Check the badge first. Open the exact program you want and confirm it says it is included with Coursera Plus before you start a trial. That five-second check prevents the most expensive mistake on this page.
Break-even calculator
Coursera Plus break-even calculator
Enter the programs you genuinely plan to finish. Use the total hours from each program page, for example "about 6 months at 10 hours a week" is roughly 260 hours.
Worked examples
These use list prices and a $49/month program fee (a common figure for single-company Professional Certificates; yours may be higher). Hours are illustrative. Use the estimate on the real program page.
| Scenario | Study time | Pay per program | Plus Monthly | Plus Annual | Cheapest |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| One short course or Specialization | ~2 months | $98 | $118 | $399 | Per program |
| One Professional Certificate at the advertised pace | ~6 months | $294 | $354 | $399 | Per program |
| The same certificate at half the advertised pace | ~12 months | $588 | $708 | $399 | Plus Annual |
| Two Professional Certificates back to back | ~10–12 months | $490–$588 | $590–$708 | $399 | Plus Annual |
| Exploring lots of short courses and Guided Projects | Ongoing | Adds up quickly | $59 each month | $399 | Plus (monthly first) |
The pattern: monthly beats annual below about seven months ($59 × 7 = $413 > $399), and a single-program subscription beats Plus when you only want one included program and will finish it at the advertised pace. Plus only pulls ahead once you are slower than planned, or once you stack programs.
The completion reality check
The biggest reason Plus disappoints is not price. It is time. Program pages estimate hours at a steady weekly pace, and learners who write about regretting their subscription usually describe overestimating the hours they had. Online-course completion rates are notoriously low across the industry. Before you buy, look at the last month of your calendar and count the hours you actually had free, not the hours you hope to have.
The safest strategy we found in learner discussions and creator reviews:
- Start the 7-day free trial of Plus Monthly (or of the single program) and finish Module 1 of your main program.
- Pay monthly for the first one or two months and track your real hours per week.
- If you are on pace and planning a second program, switch to annual. You will have proven the habit before committing $399.
- If you are buying annual straight away, use the 14-day refund window to open every course you bought it for.
Traps to avoid
- Double billing. Coursera's help center states that existing subscriptions are not cancelled automatically when you buy Plus. Cancel old program subscriptions in My Purchases the same day.
- Refunds only on annual, only within 14 days. Monthly payments aren't refunded, and there are no partial refunds on either plan.
- Annual renewals. The plan renews automatically at the then-current price. Renewal charges are not refunded, so set a reminder two weeks before.
- Access ends when the subscription ends. Courses revert to preview mode. Download certificates and anything else you want to keep while you are subscribed.
- Financial aid and Plus don't mix. Starting a trial cancels a pending financial-aid application. If you qualify for aid, it can be cheaper than Plus.
- App-store purchases. If you subscribe in the iOS or Android app, cancellation and refunds go through Apple or Google, not Coursera.
How to cancel Coursera Plus and get a refund
- Log in on a web browser → account menu → My Purchases.
- Find Coursera Plus (and any other subscriptions) → Cancel subscription → confirm, and keep the confirmation email.
- For an annual refund within 14 days: Purchases → Purchase History → Request refund. Coursera says it takes about 7–10 business days, and access switches to preview.
Pros and cons
What we like
- One price for over 90% of the catalog, including most Google, IBM and Meta certificates
- Unlimited certificates while subscribed
- Strong value when you stack programs or study slowly
- Monthly option with a 7-day trial lets you test before committing
- Annual plan has a 14-day money-back guarantee
What to watch out for
- Easy to pay for a year and use it for a month
- Degrees, MasterTrack and some certificates aren't included
- Existing subscriptions keep billing unless you cancel them
- No partial refunds; monthly payments aren't refunded
- Access to materials ends when you stop paying
Who should buy Coursera Plus, and who shouldn't
Buy it if you are planning two or more programs this year, you study slower than the advertised pace, or you want to sample widely before choosing a career direction.
Skip it if you want one included program you'll finish in under ~6 months (a single-program subscription is cheaper), your target program isn't included, you qualify for financial aid, or you have never finished an online course before. Prove the habit monthly first.

Monthly or annual? A decision table
| Your situation | Better choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One certificate, and you can study 8+ hours a week | Monthly (US$59) | Many beginner certificates can be finished in a few months at that pace, so you may never reach the annual break-even of about 7 months (US$399 ÷ US$59) |
| Two or more certificates over the next year | Annual (US$399) | Once you'd pay for 7 or more months, annual is cheaper. The 14-day refund window gives you time to check the fit |
| Unsure you'll stick with it | Monthly, using the 7-day trial | Lowest commitment. Cancel any month and keep access to the end of that billing period |
| Studying only on weekends | Usually annual, if you'll really study all year | Slow pace means more months, which favours annual. Be honest about your track record |
| You need one specific course that isn't in Plus | Neither: buy it directly | Plus doesn't cover every course or any degree tuition |
| You live in India | Monthly only | Coursera says annual Plus isn't offered there, per its help center (check your region) |
| You can't afford it | Apply for financial aid first | Financial aid can cover an individual course. Don't start a Plus trial while an application is pending, because Coursera says that cancels it |
A 12-month plan that makes annual Plus pay off
The people who get value from Plus treat it like a semester, not a streaming service. Here's an example plan for someone with about 6–8 hours a week. Adjust it to your goal, and check each program's estimated length on its own page, because Coursera's estimates assume a set number of hours per week.
- Weeks 1–2 (refund window): enrol in your main certificate and finish at least the first course's opening modules. If the format or pace doesn't suit you, you're still inside the 14-day annual refund window.
- Months 1–5: work through the main certificate (for example, a beginner data, IT support, UX or project-management certificate). Put fixed study blocks in your calendar.
- Months 6–8: take a complementary Specialization, such as SQL after data analytics or a cloud fundamentals course after IT support, to build depth.
- Months 9–11: build a portfolio project using what you learned and add the certificates to your CV and LinkedIn profile.
- Month 12: decide whether to renew. Turn off auto-renewal by then if you've finished what you set out to do.
If you're mid-plan at month 6 with nothing finished, that's the signal to switch to monthly billing at renewal or stop. Sunk cost isn't a reason to keep paying.
Checklist before you click subscribe
- Search for your exact certificate or course and confirm it shows as included in Coursera Plus.
- Check whether your employer, university or government programme already gives you Coursera access.
- Cancel or finish any existing single-program subscription. Coursera doesn't cancel those automatically when you buy Plus.
- Note the trial end date (monthly) or 14-day refund deadline (annual) in your calendar.
- Check the price for your country on the official page, since Coursera uses localized pricing.
- Try the free first-module preview of your main course first to judge the teaching style at no cost.

Coursera Plus FAQ
How much is Coursera Plus?
On 31 October 2026, Coursera's Plus page listed $59 per month or $399 per year in US dollars. Prices vary by country and promotions change, so confirm on the official page.
Is Coursera Plus monthly or annual better?
Monthly is cheaper if you'll study for less than about seven months ($59 × 7 = $413, more than $399). Annual is cheaper beyond that. Many learners start monthly and switch once they know they'll keep going.
Is there a Coursera Plus free trial?
Yes, the monthly plan starts with a 7-day free trial that converts to paid unless you cancel. The annual plan has a 14-day money-back guarantee instead.
Can I get a refund on Coursera Plus?
Annual Coursera Plus can be refunded within 14 days of the original payment. Monthly payments aren't refunded and there are no partial refunds.
Can I cancel Coursera Plus anytime?
Yes. Cancelling stops the next charge, and you keep access until the end of the current billing period.
Does Coursera Plus include Google certificates?
Coursera says Plus includes most Professional Certificates, and Google's certificates have generally been included. Check the specific program page for the Coursera Plus mention before subscribing.
Does Coursera Plus include degrees?
No. Online degrees and for-credit courses are excluded and priced separately by the university.
Does Coursera Plus include MasterTrack?
No. MasterTrack and similar university-credit programs are outside Plus.
What happens to my certificates if I cancel Coursera Plus?
You keep access until the paid period ends, then courses revert to preview mode. Download certificate PDFs and add them to LinkedIn while subscribed so you have your own copy.
Can I take multiple certificates at once with Plus?
Yes. Plus includes unlimited enrolments and certificates, but splitting your hours usually slows every program down.
Can I share Coursera Plus with family?
Coursera Plus is an individual subscription. Coursera for Teams is the multi-user product.
Can I use financial aid with Coursera Plus?
Financial aid is applied course by course and is separate from Plus. Starting a Plus trial cancels a pending financial-aid application, so choose one route.
Is Coursera Plus available in India?
Coursera's help center says only the monthly Coursera Plus option is available in India.
Is Coursera Plus worth it for one course?
Usually not. A single course or single-program subscription is cheaper unless you'll take much longer than advertised.
Coursera Plus or Udemy Personal Plan?
Coursera Plus is stronger for recognised credentials and structured programs. Udemy's plan is stronger for many short practical tool skills. On Udemy you lose progress and certificate access if you cancel.
Does Coursera Plus renew automatically?
Yes. Both plans renew automatically until cancelled. Annual renewal charges are not refunded, so set a reminder before the renewal date.
Does a promotional first-year price continue at renewal?
Promotions typically apply to the first billing period only, and the plan then renews at the regular price. Read the offer terms at checkout.
